Membership Chairman

From Mike Babicz:
I wish all of our members, new and veteran, a good season or seasons as the case may be.   Please remember, dues are due by the end of August.  For one sport, $40, and $55 for two.  Dues for both football and basketball are due by August 31.  Individuals who have not turned in their dues are not eligible for consideration for the NOA's Top 15 list.  Dues must be paid by check made payable to the NOA. To make sure we have up to date information, please fill out a membership application form from the web site even if you have been a NOA member forever.  We want to make sure our membership list is as complete as possible.  You can print off a copy and submit it with your check as the best way to do it.   Please take care of this NOW.  If you have any questions or concerns, contact me ASAP.  Thanks to all who have been helping us to bring in new members. Since my election to the membership chairman position, I have received a steady stream of new members contacting me. Please make them welcome at meetings and any events we might have.  Experienced officials, please offer to help them if you can.  Remember, we were all there once.   I wish to thank everyone who helped make the 3rd annual Bob Brown Shootout in June a great success.  The event netted the scholarship fund close to $1,000, which equals one scholarship.  Tentative plans are to return to College of Lake County next year.  The teams which participated this year gave great feedback in how much they enjoyed it.  The NOA received national exposure in the NASO Online newsletter for September which had an article about the event.  Thank you again to everyone who helped out.  It was a great way to remember Bob and will continue to be.   The annual Keith Ryan Scholarship/Lake County High School Sports Hall of Fame Banquet will be on Thursday, Nov. 1 at Midlane Country Club in Wadsworth.  Social hour is at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7 and the program to follow.  The NOA nominee(we are awaiting confirmation) will be inducted as an official.  Tickets at the "NOA Table" are $45 instead of the $50 which is the normal price.  If you are interested in attending, please contact myself or Jim Bernardi as we are both on the committee.  It is always nice to have a good turnout from the NOA.   If you are planning on officiating at Quentin Road this season, or have already been holding dates for me, please make sure to respond to the invitation to join Carl Majeski's group, LCCC, on The Arbitor and also to check the box "ready to be assigned."  This will make things much easier for all of us.   I look forward to meeting you all and seeing you at the NOA functions and events.

Special Olympics News   How has summer been treating you?  Hopefully you are enjoying the slight cool down we are having.  I have basketball dates for you and wanted to get them to you as soon as I could!  I have attached a form that might work for some refs.  I don’t mind if people just e-mail me and let me know when they can work.  I can be flexible with the times as well – I know sometimes people only come for a few games.  December 1, 2012 – Female Qualifier and Holiday Invitational – Hersey High School January 13, 2013 – High School Team Competition – Hersey High School January 27, 2013 – Senior Male Team Competition – Vernon Hills High School January 27, 2013 – Senior Male Team Competition – Deerfield High School  Hope the dates work and I look forward to working with you again this year to give our competition the quality it deserves!
Thanks,  Susan  Susan Foege Northeastern/Area 13 103 Schelter Road, Suite 21 Lincolnshire IL 60069 847-478-0935 Fax - 847-478-0982 sfoege@soill.org  Area 13 is on facebook - like us!

This is a great opportunity for basketball officials to give something back to the game and to a group that plays the game for all the right reasons. If you have never worked Special Olympics it is an experience I guarantee that you will enjoy. The NOA is a supporter of Special Olympics and we as a group need to step up and help officiate the Special Olympics Basketball games.

From our Chairman
If you have any items that you would like the Board to discuss at our September 10th  meeting send them to Rocky Nelson @ (rockyref@sbcglobal.net). Good luck to our Football members as they start their season this weekend.

NOA Holds Prep Shootout in Memory of a Member
Northern Officials Association (NOA) held the Bob Brown Shootout prep boys’ basketball tournament in mid-June at the College of Lake County in Grayslake, Ill. in honor of  it’s longtime member of the group. Brown, official and NOA assignment chair for basketball and football games, lost his long battle with cancer earlier this year. Brown was 75 years old. Proceeds from the event went to the Bob Brown Scholarship Fund. The scholarship is awarded to a Crystal Lake High School District senior basketball player in recognition for his contribution to his school as a student-athlete. “Bob was fantastic to work with”, said Mike Babicz, basketball official and membership chairman for the NOA. “He was very patient and always encouraging. You couldn’t get a negative word out of him. You might have had a bad game or kicked a call, but he never turned it into a big deal”
